‘Día De Los Muertos’ Trademark Eyed By Disney; Mexican 'Day Of The Dead' Holiday Is Theme For New Movie

Every year, the 1^st and 2^nd of November, Mexico shuts down to celebrate “Día de los Muertos,” a holiday to honor, pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. People build altars using sugar skulls, marigolds, and anything that the departed liked and visit their graves with these as gifts.

Celebrating the deaths of ancestors apparently has appealed a lot to Disney, who now wants to trademark “Día de los Muertos” because it has been selected as the topic of an upcoming film from Pixar Animation Studios.

You must be thinking why promote a movie about death and target it to little kids. Well, think of it as a cultural experience. The “Día De Los Muertos” or “Day of the Dead” is not about portraying the morbid aspect of death, but celebrating life, and appreciating the good times people had while on earth.

If you think about it, it’s about teaching the kids to leave a positive mark on the world so when time comes, people remember them, and value their contributions to society. They’ll also learn about Mexican culture, which is very rich, interesting and colorful, and as a parent, you’ll feel good to have a great educational family outing.

Among the trademark applications that The Walt Disney Company has filed for, are education and entertainment services, confectionery, cosmetics, transmission or reproduction of sound or images, computer programs, accessories, jewelry, paper articles, luggage, and more.

Even though the project is officially known (for now) as “The Untitled Pixar Movie about Dia de los Muertos,” filing the application might indicate that the movie could actually be called “Día de los Muertos,” and they want to play it safe with the name, since it’s a popular celebration.

The film will be directed by Lee Unkrich and will hit the theatres in 2015.

Art and fashion crowds made for a stunning scene at Berlin’s most recent gallery weekend, where, on Thursday, Yohji Yamamoto presented “Cutting Age,” a runway show of his iconic looks from 1992 to the present. With black being a favorite of both Yamamoto and Berlin, the color was prevalent, as were asymmetric hemlines and voluminous shapes. The themes carried into the next few days’ events with arty-chic looks leading the way — sometimes with men’s fashion trumping women’s.

Fashion week- I figure there are two ways to write this post; 1- I can talk about the designs, trends for fall, how amaaaazinnnng everything and everyone was, make myself seem super fancy and fantastic for having the opportunity to be amongst fashion’s upper echelon, kiss kiss etc etc, or 2- I can be 100% brutally honest. I figure the second option is more my style.

Don’t get me wrong- there were good things, things I liked. Rachel Roy had a great collection, Caroline Herrera, Marc by Marc Jacobs and JCrew (no brainers)…. but nothing really stuck out to me as unforgettable. Granted, I haven’t gotten a chance to properly peruse Style.com yet to discover everything I have yet to see, and I am sure there is some amazingness somewhere.

Look #13 from Calvin Klein is pretty great, even if Tilda looks half in the bag.

Casting……. oh sorry, I fell asleep for a minute thinking about the casting this season. A self proclaimed model geek, the show castings are one of my very favorite things about fashion week. The surprises (Gisele closing Alexander Wang F/W 2012? GENIUS), the competition of new faces for who walks for who and how many times, which agency knocks it out of the park with a frameable show package- NONE of that seemed to happen this season. No one stuck out as a breakout star to me, no casting choices made me giddy, no new and exciting faces to stalk on Models.com YAWN.

My new pet peeve? Street style fashion bloggers. Those people who have blogs that consist of nothing but photos of what they wore on a given day, professionally photographed by their roommates maybe? Anyway, we get it. You’re crazy & daring and show it in your outfit choices. But I have to be honest- when there is a blizzard warning in New York City, and you still insist on wearing mile high platforms, sunglasses, faux colored fur- you look like a moron. Ok, let me re-word that; 9x out of 10, you look like a moron, blizzard or not. Street style used to be so inspiring and it feels that more often than not now it’s just one person trying to out to the last. You can spot a street style blogger from 4 city blocks away- just look for the ridiculously tall person in neon. I asked this on Facebook the other day and no one had an answer, so we’ll try here- when exactly, did street style die?

And don’t even get me started on the interpretive dancing from hell that opened up the 4 Corners of a Circle show. Ridiculous.
